Famous Italian- Americans
  • Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone is known to her fans simply as Madonna.  The pop icon was born to an Italian American family in Bay City, Michigan in 1958.   The early death of her mother and her devout Catholic upbringing marked her life and is noticeable in her musical material.  She began her recording career in the 80's with dance hits like Holiday, Borderline, and Lucky Star.  She would go on to become one of the most successful female recording artists of all time. Madonna has also been involved in acting, including the role of Eva Peron in the film version of Evita.  
  • Athlete Joe DiMaggio was born Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio to Italian immigrants in 1914 in Martinez, California. He joined the New York Yankees in 1936, and was donned "The Yankee Clipper".  In the thirteen seasons that DiMaggio played for the New York Yankees, the Yanks won ten American League Pennants and ten World Series Championships. DiMaggio was named Most Valuable Player in 1939, 1941, and 1947.  For two years during his tenure with the Yankees, DiMaggio served in the Army during World War II.  He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. He was married to actress Marilyn Monroe.  DiMaggio died in 1999.
  • Rudolph William Giuliani was born in 1944 to Italian immigrants. He served as the 107th mayor of New York City from 1994-2001.  Under his watch, crime plummeted in New York, which is often attributed to Giuliani's 'zero tolerance' approach. During his last year in office, New York was attacked by terrorists who flew passenger jets into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Giuliani's strength and tenacity brought the city together during a most tragic event in the history of America.
  • Ray Romano- Actor/Comedian
  • Antonin Scalia is the first United States Supreme Court Justice of Italian-American heritage.  He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1936.  His father, professor of Romance Languages, a was born in Sicily.  His mother, a schoolteacher, was born to Italian immigrants. Antonin attend Georgetown University and Harvard Law School. He has taught law at both University of Virginia Law School and the University of Chicago Law School. President Ronald Reagan appointed Scalia to the Supreme Court in 1986. Scalia is recognized as one of the more conservative justices. 
  • Francis Albert Sinatra- Singer
